Decision guide

All latex vs latex hybrid: the first decision in choosing an organic mattress

All latex beds feel even and buoyant from edge to edge, and they tend to be heavy. Hybrids feel a little more familiar if you're coming from a spring mattress, and the coils help air move through the bed. Neither one's better in general, it really comes down to what you like.

Here's how our five split: the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss and the Saatva Zenhaven are all latex. The Avocado Green, the Birch Natural and the Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Vegan are hybrids that pair latex with coils.

In detail

The best of each build

Our pick

All latex: PlushBeds Botanical Bliss

  • 100 night return trial
  • Separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment
  • 25 year warranty
  • Medium (5.5 of 10) or Medium Firm (8 of 10)
  • Who it is forYou want all latex and certified organic textiles, and the most latex for the money.
  • Who it is not forYou're coming from a spring mattress and you want that familiar feel. A hybrid will suit you better.
  • Worth knowingYou've only got two firmness levels to choose from, Medium and Medium Firm.

The Botanical Bliss is latex from top to bottom, and it's certified organic in both its latex and its textiles. The build is six layers: a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, GOTS certified organic wool, a GOTS certified organic cotton panel, a natural latex comfort layer, a GOLS certified organic latex comfort layer on the 12 inch model, and a 6 inch GOLS certified organic latex support core. There are no coils and no synthetic foam layers to soften over time.

You choose the height first, then one of two firmness levels. Medium, rated 5.5 out of 10 by the brand, is the one PlushBeds positions for side sleepers. Medium Firm, rated 8 out of 10, is positioned for back and stomach sleepers. And because the layers sit inside a zippered cover, you can adjust the firmness under the brand's 365 Night Comfort Guarantee instead of returning the whole bed. The return trial is 100 nights, and the warranty is 25 years, with full replacement in years 1 to 10 and prorated replacement in years 11 to 25.

Hybrid: Avocado Green Mattress

  • 1 year trial, returns after 30 days
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Firm, Medium or Plush
  • Who it is forYou want the deepest certification list and a full year to decide.
  • Who it is not forYou're set on an all latex build with no coils.
  • Worth knowingReturns open after 30 days, and a return carries a $99 fee.

Avocado's whole argument is certification depth, and it's a strong one. The Green Mattress is certified organic at the finished product level under GOTS, and the brand lists five further standards for the whole mattress, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free. The latex is GOLS certified organic Dunlop over up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven zones, needle tufted by hand in California.

The Medium feel carries 3 inches of latex at 11 inches high, and it's the brand's most popular. Plush carries 5 inches at 13 inches high and it's positioned for side sleepers. Firm carries 2 inches at 11.5 inches. You'll get a full year for the trial, with a $99 return fee, and the warranty runs 25 years with the first 10 non prorated.

Before you buy

Questions buyers ask

Should I choose all latex or a latex hybrid?

All latex beds feel even and buoyant from edge to edge, and they tend to be heavy. Hybrids feel a little more familiar if you're coming from a spring mattress, and the coils help air move through the bed. Neither one's better in general.

Which mattresses here are all latex?

That's the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss and the Saatva Zenhaven.

Which are hybrids?

That's the Avocado Green, the Birch Natural and the Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Vegan.

Which is better for a restless partner?

Honestly, neither build is a fix on its own. What helps is that all latex beds and latex over individually wrapped coils transfer far less motion than an old connected spring mattress. Our latex vs memory foam guide covers motion in more depth.

The short version

Our picks: Botanical Bliss for all latex, Avocado for a hybrid

I'd choose the build first, then the brand. For all latex with certified organic textiles, that's the Botanical Bliss. For a hybrid with the deepest certification list and a full year to decide, it's the Avocado Green.
