GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard, covers products made from organically grown natural rubber latex. GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, covers textiles such as cotton and wool. A mattress can carry one, the other or both, and it's easy to mix them up.

Every mattress in our comparison is built on GOLS certified organic latex. GOTS is where they differ: some certify the cotton and wool, one certifies the finished mattress, and some list neither in our checked facts.

The Botanical Bliss is latex from top to bottom and certified organic in both its latex and its textiles. The build is six layers: a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, GOTS certified organic wool, a GOTS certified organic cotton panel, a natural latex comfort layer, a GOLS certified organic latex comfort layer on the 12 inch model, and a 6 inch GOLS certified organic latex support core. There are no coils and no synthetic foam layers to soften over time.

Certifications listed on the product page are GOLS, GOTS for both the cotton and the wool, GREENGUARD Gold, eco-INSTITUT and Control Union.

Avocado Green Mattress, GOTS on the finished mattress

Avocado's argument is certification depth, and it's a good one. The Green Mattress is certified organic at the finished product level under GOTS, and the brand lists five further standards for the whole mattress, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free. The latex is GOLS certified organic Dunlop over up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven zones, needle tufted by hand in California.

The Medium feel carries 3 inches of latex at 11 inches high and is the brand's most popular. Plush carries 5 inches at 13 inches high and is positioned for side sleepers. Firm carries 2 inches at 11.5 inches. The trial is a full year, with a $99 return fee, and the warranty runs 25 years with the first 10 non prorated.

What is the difference between GOLS and GOTS?

It's simpler than the names make it sound: GOLS covers products made from organically grown natural rubber latex. GOTS covers textiles made with certified organic fibres, such as cotton and wool.

What percentage of organic content does GOTS require?

At least 70% certified organic fibres. The "Organic" label grade requires at least 95%. That's the number to look for.

Does GOLS set a percentage?

The Control Union page we checked doesn't state one. It says all the raw materials in a GOLS labelled product must meet organic origin requirements, apart from approved additional materials and accessories.

Which mattresses here carry both?

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss lists GOTS for both its cotton and its wool, the Avocado Green is certified at the finished product level under GOTS, and the Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Vegan lists GOTS on the brand's page. All five are built on GOLS certified organic latex.
