Hot sleepers

Latex mattresses for hot sleepers: what in the build matters

If you already sleep hot on a foam bed, I'd steer you toward latex. It's the safer direction. Latex has an open cell structure, it's usually made with pinhole ventilation and it doesn't rely on body heat to work, so it tends to sleep closer to neutral.

Here's the honest bit: no brand we compare publishes a temperature test, and we haven't slept on these beds, so I won't rank them by how cool they feel. What I can show you is what each build contains that the brands themselves link to airflow and moisture.

PlushBeds trial and warranty, in plain terms

Here's how I'd read the PlushBeds terms: you've got a 100 night return trial, plus a separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment. The warranty is 25 years, with full replacement in years 1 to 10 and prorated replacement in years 11 to 25.

Our PlushBeds trial and warranty guide sets out both in full.

The materials

Why latex tends to sleep closer to neutral

Latex has an open cell structure and it's usually made with pinhole ventilation, and it doesn't rely on body heat to work, so it tends to sleep closer to neutral. Brands in our comparison pair it with wool and cotton, which manage moisture at the surface. Memory foam works by absorbing heat, and dense foam holds that heat around the body.

Coils add another route. Hybrids feel a little more familiar if you're coming from a spring mattress, and the coils help air move through the bed. Our all latex vs hybrid guide covers the rest of that trade, and latex vs memory foam covers temperature in more depth.

In detail

Three builds worth a look

Our pick

PlushBeds Botanical Bliss, all latex under organic wool and cotton

  • 100 night return trial
  • Separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment
  • 25 year warranty
  • Medium (5.5 of 10) or Medium Firm (8 of 10)
  • Who it is forAnyone who wants all latex and certified organic textiles, and the most latex for the money.
  • Who it is not forSomeone coming from a spring mattress who wants that familiar feel. The hybrids suit them better.
  • Worth knowingYou'll get a 100 night return trial, a separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment, and a 25 year warranty with full replacement in years 1 to 10 and prorated replacement in years 11 to 25.

The Botanical Bliss is latex from top to bottom, and it's certified organic in both its latex and its textiles. The build is six layers: a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, GOTS certified organic wool, a GOTS certified organic cotton panel, a natural latex comfort layer, a GOLS certified organic latex comfort layer on the 12 inch model, and a 6 inch GOLS certified organic latex support core. There are no coils and no synthetic foam layers to soften over time.

The cover is GOTS certified organic cotton in a circular knit the brand chose for stretch and airflow. Under it, GOTS certified organic wool does the temperature and moisture work at the surface and serves as the fire barrier, so no chemical flame retardants are used. That's a build I like on paper: it's simple, and every layer's got a clear job.

Saatva Zenhaven, vented Talalay latex

  • 365 night trial
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Luxury Plush (4 to 5 of 10) or Gentle Firm (7 to 8 of 10)
  • Who it is forSomeone who cannot decide on firmness in advance and wants two feels in one bed.
  • Who it is not forPartners who want two different feels at the same time. The EOS Classic sets each side of the bed separately.
  • Worth knowingReturns carry a $99 processing fee.

Zenhaven solves the firmness gamble in a way I really like: it puts two feels in one mattress. Flip it one way for Luxury Plush, rated 4 to 5 out of 10, flip it the other way for Gentle Firm, rated 7 to 8 out of 10. The latex is natural Talalay with a five zone layer and vented airflow channels, over an organic New Zealand wool flame barrier, inside a cover that includes organic cotton. The latex is GOLS certified, and the mattress carries eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold listings on the brand's page.

Saatva does delivery differently, too: it's free in room delivery, setup and old mattress removal, rather than a box at the door. The trial is 365 nights with a $99 processing fee on returns, and the warranty is lifetime.

Avocado Green Mattress, latex over coils

  • 1 year trial, returns after 30 days
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Firm, Medium or Plush
  • Who it is forBuyers who want the deepest certification list and a full year to decide.
  • Who it is not forAnyone set on an all latex build with no coils.
  • Worth knowingReturns open only after 30 days, and a return carries a $99 fee.

Avocado's big pitch is certification depth, and honestly, it's a strong one. The Green Mattress is certified organic at the finished product level under GOTS, and the brand lists five further standards for the whole mattress, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free. The latex is GOLS certified organic Dunlop over up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven zones, needle tufted by hand in California.

The Medium feel carries 3 inches of latex at 11 inches high and it's the brand's most popular. Plush carries 5 inches at 13 inches high and is positioned for side sleepers. Firm carries 2 inches at 11.5 inches. You'll get a full year for the trial, with a $99 return fee, and the warranty runs 25 years with the first 10 non prorated.

Questions buyers ask

Does latex sleep cooler than memory foam?

It tends to, yes. Latex has an open cell structure, it's usually made with pinhole ventilation and it doesn't rely on body heat to work, so it tends to sleep closer to neutral. Memory foam works by absorbing heat, and dense foam holds that heat around the body.

Which of these sleeps coolest?

I won't rank them that way. No brand we compare publishes a temperature test, and we haven't slept on these beds, so we don't rank them by temperature. This page shows you what each build contains instead.

Do coils help?

They can, yes. Hybrids pair latex with coils, and the coils help air move through the bed. The Avocado, Birch and Naturepedic are hybrids.

What does the wool do?

In the Botanical Bliss, PlushBeds states that GOTS certified organic wool does the temperature and moisture work at the surface, and it serves as the fire barrier, too.

Is the PlushBeds trial 100 nights or 365 nights?

It's 100 nights for returns. The 365 Night Comfort Guarantee is a separate offer for firmness adjustment, not the return trial, so you've really got two different things: 100 nights to decide on a return, and 365 nights on the comfort guarantee.

The short version

Our pick: PlushBeds Botanical Bliss

If it were my money, this is the one I'd buy for this brief: it's all latex under GOTS certified organic wool and a cotton cover chosen for airflow. You've got 100 nights for returns, the 365 Night Comfort Guarantee as a separate firmness adjustment offer, and a 25 year warranty with full replacement in years 1 to 10 and prorated replacement in years 11 to 25.
