Trials and returns

Organic mattress trials and return fees, compared

Three brands give you about a year: Avocado gives 1 year, and Saatva and Birch give 365 nights. PlushBeds and Naturepedic give 100 nights, but each lets you change the feel instead of sending the bed back. That's the trade I'd weigh first.

Three of the five charge $99 on a return, and the details differ a bit: Avocado returns open only after 30 days, and PlushBeds' sale terms say to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights first.

Trial and warranty terms, in plain terms

Here's PlushBeds in plain terms: you've got a 100 night return trial, plus a separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment. The warranty is 25 years, with full replacement in years 1 to 10 and prorated replacement in years 11 to 25.

Our PlushBeds trial and warranty guide sets out both in full. As with any brand here, it's worth checking the current terms before you buy.

In detail

The three longest trials

Longest trial

Avocado Green Mattress, a full year

  • 1 year trial, returns after 30 days
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Firm, Medium or Plush
  • Who it is forBuyers who want the deepest certification list and a full year to decide.
  • Who it is not forAnyone set on an all latex build with no coils.
  • Worth knowingReturns open only after 30 days, and a return carries a $99 fee.

Avocado's big pitch is certification depth, and honestly, it's a strong one. The Green Mattress is certified organic at the finished product level under GOTS, and the brand lists five further standards for the whole mattress, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free. The latex is GOLS certified organic Dunlop over up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven zones, needle tufted by hand in California.

The Medium feel carries 3 inches of latex at 11 inches high and it's the brand's most popular. Plush carries 5 inches at 13 inches high and is positioned for side sleepers. Firm carries 2 inches at 11.5 inches. You'll get a full year for the trial, with a $99 return fee, and the warranty runs 25 years with the first 10 non prorated.

Saatva Zenhaven, 365 nights and delivery handled

  • 365 night trial
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Luxury Plush (4 to 5 of 10) or Gentle Firm (7 to 8 of 10)
  • Who it is forSomeone who cannot decide on firmness in advance and wants two feels in one bed.
  • Who it is not forPartners who want two different feels at the same time. The EOS Classic sets each side of the bed separately.
  • Worth knowingReturns carry a $99 processing fee.

Zenhaven solves the firmness gamble in a way I really like: it puts two feels in one mattress. Flip it one way for Luxury Plush, rated 4 to 5 out of 10, flip it the other way for Gentle Firm, rated 7 to 8 out of 10. The latex is natural Talalay with a five zone layer and vented airflow channels, over an organic New Zealand wool flame barrier, inside a cover that includes organic cotton. The latex is GOLS certified, and the mattress carries eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold listings on the brand's page.

Saatva does delivery differently, too: it's free in room delivery, setup and old mattress removal, rather than a box at the door. The trial is 365 nights with a $99 processing fee on returns, and the warranty is lifetime.

Birch Natural, 365 nights at the lowest entry price

  • 365 night trial
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • One medium firm feel
  • Who it is forBuyers who want the lowest entry price with long terms.
  • Who it is not forA side sleeper who knows they need a soft surface.
  • Worth knowingCertifications listed are GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold, and the trial is 365 nights.

Birch is Helix Sleep's natural brand, and the Natural is its straightforward medium firm hybrid: an organic cotton cover, GOLS certified organic latex from Sri Lanka, organic New Zealand wool and individually wrapped steel coils, assembled in Arizona. Certifications listed on Birch's own pages are GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold.

The terms are strong for the price, if you ask me: a 365 night trial, with a $99 removal fee on returns, and a limited lifetime warranty.

The alternative

Changing the feel instead of returning the bed

A long trial isn't the only safety net, though. Three mattresses here let you change the feel without a return. The PlushBeds 365 Night Comfort Guarantee adjusts firmness, the Zenhaven flips to its other side, and the Naturepedic EOS Classic exchanges comfort layers free inside its 100 night trial.

That suits you if you like the mattress but picked the wrong feel. It doesn't help if you want your money back, so I'd read the return trial and the adjustment offer as two different things.

Before you buy

Questions buyers ask

Which organic mattress has the longest trial?

Avocado gives 1 year, with returns after 30 days. Saatva Zenhaven and Birch Natural give 365 nights. They're the longest here.

Do returns cost anything?

Three of them do. The brands' own pages list a $99 return fee at Avocado, a $99 processing fee on returns at Saatva, and a $99 removal fee on returns at Birch. As with any brand here, it's worth checking the current return policy before you buy, since terms can change.

Is the PlushBeds trial 100 nights or 365 nights?

It's 100 nights for returns. The 365 Night Comfort Guarantee is a separate firmness adjustment offer, not the return trial. Our PlushBeds trial and warranty guide explains both.

How long should I sleep on it before deciding?

I'd use the whole trial before you judge. Every brand here expects an adjustment period, and several require at least 30 nights before a return.

The short version

Most time to decide: Avocado Green Mattress

It's a full year, with returns after 30 days and a $99 return fee, a 25 year limited warranty and the deepest certification list in our comparison. If time to decide is your top priority, this is the one I'd buy.
